PTO Sprayers vs Engine Sprayers — Which Is Right for You?
PTO Sprayers
A PTO (power take-off) sprayer is driven directly by your tractor's PTO shaft. Because the tractor provides the power, PTO sprayers tend to have a lower purchase price than self-contained engine models.
Best for:
- Operations that already own a modern, high-horsepower tractor
- Larger acreage where consistent tractor availability is not an issue
- Growers who want to minimize the number of engines to maintain
Engine-Driven Sprayers
An engine-driven (self-propelled or trailer) sprayer carries its own gasoline or diesel engine, making it completely independent of a tractor. This is often the preferred choice when multiple operations need a sprayer simultaneously.
Best for:
- Farms where the tractor is needed for other tasks during spray season
- Contract spraying or multi-ranch operations
- Operations that want maximum scheduling flexibility
Matching Sprayer Size to Your Orchard or Vineyard
Tank capacity and fan output must be matched to your acreage, row spacing, and canopy density. A sprayer that is too small requires constant refilling; one that is oversized wastes product and fuel.
Small Operations (under 50 acres)
500–800 gallon tank. Single-fan models are typically sufficient. Ideal for family ranches and small diversified farms.
Mid-Size (50–200 acres)
800–1,200 gallon tank. Single or twin-fan configuration depending on canopy height and row spacing. Most common for Central Valley almond and pistachio operations.
Large Commercial (200+ acres)
1,200–1,500+ gallon tank. Twin-fan and high-output configurations. Designed to minimize field time during narrow spray windows.
